The Philippine Heart Center maintains a social service program that makes
financial assistance available to
those needing medical and surgical treatment of heart diseases. A limited assistance is also provided those
needing pulmonary surgeries. Much as we would like to offer our services to patients suffering from other medical
and surgical problems, our mandate and resources limit us to do so.
Upon applying for financial assistance, the patient and/or immediate family member is evaluated by the social
worker to determine his financial capability and resources to participate in the treatment process.
Medical Assistance Program - Extending part-free
medical/surgical services to patients with cardiovascular and heart-related illnesses
Although heavily involved in the diagnosis, treatment and management of heart ailments, the Philippine Heart
Center continues to maintain its focus on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases,
the preferred option in arresting the incidence of this malady.
In pursuit of this goal, the Center has published among others
"The Healthy
HeartCookbook"
featuring low cholesterol, low salt recipes for heart patients and weight watchers.
With over 20,000 copies sold, the Cookbook, with the first volume launched in
1990 and now on its 5th printing, is considered a legitimate bestseller in the Philippine book market.
A second volume came off the press in 1993 that has more recipes and features a variety of meat dishes, soups, vegetables and desserts. Likewise, the "HeartLetter" is a regular magazine
designed to help the public understand heart diseases, their prevention and treatment.
The teaching of the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases in public
elementaryand high schools was a landmark program of the Center. Following a successful test period in the early 1980's, the integration of heart health care into the regular curriculum was made possible with the help of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports.
The Center also conducts regular courses in Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support for
those who need to know the proper ways to restore and support life following a heart attack.
